Les 13 épisodes de la troisième saison se passent en Nouvelle-Zélande et en Allemagne avec une incursion à Amsterdam. Cette saison met en avant la fusion entre régiments, situation durement vécue par les unités à l'époque à cause des restrictions budgétaires de l'armée.
 
La compagnie des Fusiliers du Roi est en exercice en Nouvelle-Zélande et fait face à l'hostilité de leurs homologues locaux. Le sergent Tony Wilton, le caporal Paddy Garvey et le caporal suppléant Dave Tucker partagent leur expérience avec le fusilier novice Vinny Bowles. Mais ce qui commence comme une rivalité amicale avec les Kiwis menace de devenir incontrôlable. Pendant ce temps à Hong Kong, Nancy Garvey, Donna Tucker et la jeune Sheena Bowles réservent une surprise pour leurs maris. L'excitation monte pour les hommes de la compagnie A à l'appoche de l'exercice de tir à balles réelles qui se termine par un drame, la mort du jeune Vinny Bowles. Toujours en vacances en Nouvelle-Zélande avec Donna et Sheena, Nancy discute de son avenir avec Paddy.
 
Dans les épisodes 3 et 4, les officiers sont confrontés à la fusion entre les régiments des Fusiliers du Roi et de Cumbria. Ils essayent de remonter le moral de la compagnie alors que le régiment se prépare au transfert en Allemagne. Dans ce but, les hommes sont affectés à la construction de ponts. Mais la fusion imminente des régiments ne risque pas d'améliorer leur moral. Pendant ce temps à Londres, le Lt Col Osbourne se bat pour l'avenir des Fusiliers du Roi. Mais pour Nancy et Paddy, il y a une question encore plus urgente à traiter, celle de l'avenir de leur mariage.
 
La fusion est achevée et tous tentent de s'adapter tant bien que mal aux nouveaux arrangements. Les Fusiliers du Roi ont pris leur nouveau poste en Allemagne, mais une rivalité inévitable monte entre les deux régiments fusionnés, qui met Dave Tucker en difficulté pendant un exercice. Cependant, l'arrivée du lieutenant-colonel Nick Hammond, leur nouveau commandant en chef, secoue les officiers et les hommes.
 
L'effondrement du mariage de Paddy Garvey a des répercussions directes au cours d'exercices ratés. Paddy essaye de faire face à la vie de célibataire quand il rencontre Christina Meissner. Mais après une soirée avec elle, une accusation est en passe de détruire définitivement sa carrière militaire (S3, Ep5). Plus tard, Paddy et Christina se retrouvent finalement ensemble.
 
Dans l'épisode 11, les hommes se rendent à Amsterdam pour une période de R & R "rest and recuperation". Keiron Voce et Kate Butler finissent par s'avouer leurs sentiments. Le Major Ridley donne à Paddy Garvey une chance de faire ses preuves lors d'un exercice. Il fait bonne impression mais a du mal à obtenir la reconnaissance qu'il mérite. Les hommes du régiment se préparent à partir en Bosnie dans le dernier épisode et l'émotion atteint son paroxisme avant le départ.
Le microcosme du régiment est le reflet de tous les événements de la vie et la palette de tous les sentiments et ressentis humains. Car ce sont des histoires fondamentalement humaines, le cadre militaire n'étant qu'un prétexte en résonnance avec l'actualité de l'époque en Angleterre.
 
La première série de Soldier, Soldier se situe en Angleterre au moment du retour des Fusiliers du Roi après une affectation traumatisante de six mois en Irlande du Nord et la tragédie de leurs derniers jours. Les officiers et les hommes du régiment d'infanterie attendent avec impatience et émotion de retrouver leurs familles dans leur Quartier général basé dans les Midlands.
 
Après le bonheur des retrouvailles, la vie militaire reprend vite ses droits. Le major Tom Cadnam participe à des manœuvres contre un officier rival, le major Dickie Bird de la compagnie D, qui remettent en question son jugement, avant qu'il ne découvre que son ennemi juré a eu une liaison avec sa femme, Laura, quand il était en Irlande du Nord. Cadman se bat pour sauver son honneur sur le champ de bataille et sur le front privé, tandis que sa femme doit prendre la plus importante décision de sa vie, rester avec son mari ou partir avec Dickie.
 
Au régiment, les épouses sont souvent désillusionnées, les petites amies pleines de rancune contre l'intrusion de l'armée au sein de leur relation et les enfants souffrent de l'absence de leur papa pendant des mois. Mais il suffit d'une traversée nocturne périlleuse dans une rivière glacée et un parcours du combattant épuisant, pour que les hommes ne pensent plus à leurs problèmes privés.
 
La compagnie est chargée de suppléer au travail des éboueurs en grève, ce qui met le sergent-major Chick Henwood face à un dilemne : le devoir envers ses hommes ou la fidélité envers son frère qui est l'un des grévistes. Tucker attrappe une septicémie en manipulant les ordures tandis que sa femme qui s'ennuie avec la vie de l'armée, est finalement retrouvée dans un club hors-limites.
 
Le mariage de Tony Wilton se heurte à des difficultés quand il privilégie sa carrière de boxeur avant sa femme et son nouveau-né. Lorsque le caporal Tony Wilton, le meilleur boxeur des Fusiliers du Roi, est éliminé de la compétition, Garvey et Tucker planifient un plan qui tombe à l'eau.
 
Dans l'épisode 6, David Tucker découvre que sa femme le trompe alors qu'il s'entraîne au Pays de Galles. Dans un accès de folle jalousie, il frappe un sous-officier et, de rage, déserte l'armée. Mais l'armée est sa seule famille et une fois de retour, il passe en cour martiale. Donna espère qu'il sera radié pour dire adieu à cette existence qu'elle exècre. Le soldat n'est finalement condamné qu'à une légère peine d'emprisonnement au désespoir de Donna.
 
La famille Anderson se prépare au passage de la vie de soldat à la vie d'officier. Au moment où Ian obtient sa promotion dans le corps de renseignements, un vol à grande échelle est découvert dans les magasins de matériel militaire sous sa responsabilité, ce qui menace ses chances d'avenir.
 
La première saison est intégralement filmée dans le Staffordshire, comté du centre de l'Angleterre faisant partie de la région des Midlands de l'Ouest. À partir de 1992, la production décide d'élargir le champ d'action des Fusiliers du Roi à l'étranger.
 
Dès lors, le régiment reçoit différentes affectations à travers le globe. La deuxième série se situe à Hong Kong, suivie d'un déplacement en 1993 en Nouvelle-Zélande puis en Allemagne pour la troisième saison. Pour Robson c'est l'opportunité formidable de voyager à travers le globe et de découvrir d'autres pays pour la première fois de sa vie.

The desire to become Lance Corporals almost ends in disaster for David Tucker and Midnight Rawlings after they attend a local brothel. Tucker is terrified that Donna will discover that he has a 'dose of the clap' and decides to take the matter into his own hands. Meanwhile, pregnant Donna is convinced Tucker has gone off her because he keeps giving her the cold shoulder in bed. The CO has his own troubles when his wife takes refuge of the child of an illegal immigrant.

His mood isn't helping his wife Rachel, who is preoccupied with setting up her office as a freelance journalist. In her enthusiasm to get a new fax and mobile phone, she fails to notice her husband's growing fears. 2nd Lt. Kate Butler faces hostility from the Marines during an exercise but has the last laugh.

The men are charged with cleaning up rubbish due to a national strike. Company "A" are involved in helping with refuse collection from hospitals and schools during the refuse workers strike. Tucker gets blood-poisoning and his wife, who is bored with army life, is finally found having a night out in an out-of-bounds club.

A boxing competition causes divided loyalties amongst the men and their families and betting leaves some out of pocket. Their scheme is wrecked, however, when in a shock development Wilton is recalled. Meanwhile the wives and Nancy find an acrobatic way of witnessing the men - only the climatic final.

All is not well for Sergeant Brad Conner when he learns that his old girlfriend in Australia has contracted HIV, then a rifle goes missing during an exercise with the Territorial Army. Brad Connor receives some bad news from back home. The men go on exercise against the Territorials and one reservist causes a lot of trouble for Jo Farrell and Steve Evans.

Joy Wilton's relationship with families officer Jim Greene develops while Evans and Farrell try to make some cash by selling dodgy red wine to the officers' summer ball. Michael and Marsha start to drift apart when these each pursue their own agendas. Joy Wilton has to decide if she should follow her heart and Jeremy Forsythe has to overcome his own enemies to triumph.

A late cancellation at the registry office means Garvey and his ex-wife Nancy can tie the knot a second time. New recruit Fusilier Andrew Butcher struggles to make a good impression on his first day but is causing trouble. His enthusiasm gets the better of him and his gun goes off by accident in a live fire exercise, shooting another soldier and leading to a major inquiry. His actions result in the Colonel's relationship being put under strain.

There's excitement at the news that 'B' Company are all of to South Africa, while Donna launces a magazine especially for army wives. Michael and Marsha Stubbs have to decide if they should give their marriage another chance. Corporal William Markham joins B Company and his wife creates friction amongst the other army wives.

Left stranded in Makindi. The remaining men fight to escape from Mokindi with one soldier sacrificing his life for the others. Dave and Donna have to decide if it is the end of the line for their marriage.
